Petersfield’s local news
There’s a call for a further enquiry, after an independent report identified governance failings at East Hampshire District Council.
Edward Hardy has more:
Yesterday we reported how councillors are working to change the culture of the organisation after the report identified intimidation and bullying that went back for at least a decade.
Now, East Hampshire’s Green Party is calling for what they describe as “a comprehensive enquiry into exactly what has been going on and who is responsible.”
Their spokesman, Ian James, told the Petersfield Post that what he calls poor and highly suspect decision making will have resulted in a significant cost to the council.
The council leader, Richard Millard has extended a public apology to council staff and residents across the district. He said he takes responsibility for the report and the issues it raises.
Independent local Petersfield shops are opening late tonight
If you’ve still got Christmas shopping to do, you’re in luck! There is a whole host of independent local shops that will be open into the evening tonight.
Academy Art and Crafts, Feather and Flint, Gillie G’s ladies boutique, Hector’s Menswear, LR Fashion, Lavant Rowe hairdressing, Madeline’s Kitchen and Mother Kelly’s fish and chips will be open through to 7pm.
While the Petersfield Barbershop, Refill and Replenish, Sew Creative, The Dandy Cat and Velvet and Rose will be open until 8.
And don’t forget you can park for free in the Swan Street car park after three o’clock every day between now and Christmas.
Requests for the Mayor’s Christmas Hampers are set to exceed 250
This year’s Petersfield Town Mayor’s Christmas Hamper Appeal is currently being put together by The Salvation Army and they will be available to pick up on Friday 11th December.
Funds have been received from East Hampshire District Council, Lions Club and The Salvation Army to support the hampers effort.
Discussing the launch earlier this year, Petersfield Town Council called on residents to “support this year’s Mayor’s Appeal and help bring some joy into the lives of those who have found this year the hardest of all – the lonely, the isolated and the vulnerable”
The Salvation Army will also be distributing Christmas Gifts to the children of families in need and providing Christmas Carols in the streets of Petersfield and surrounding areas to get us all in the holiday mood.
Petersfield’s Swan Surgery is urging patients to not contact them about COVID-19 vaccines.
As the UK launches a nationwide vaccination programme, Petersfield’s local medical services have asked patients not to contact them during this busy period, as the NHS will reach out to patients when it is time for them to get the jab.
The Swan Surgery team wanted to reassure people that they are still continuing to provide flu jabs throughout the season and into January, so, if you are eligible, you can still sign up to receive one.
A Petersfield heritage group is encouraging businesses to spruce up their shop fronts
After this year’s mass litter picks were cancelled due to COVID, Petersfield Society has launched a campaign to tidy up the town.
The organisation has asked owners to pick up litter outside their businesses, sweep their shop fronts and give their skirtings a fresh coat of paint to restore Petersfield’s appearance.
To find out more about the campaign or get involved, you can head to the Petersfield Society’s website https://petersfieldsociety.org.uk/
There’s still a risk of delays on Rams Hill, as restrictions are still in place with three-way traffic lights set up near the school.
If you’re travelling through Liss, be aware that there are roadworks planned on Andlers Ash Road and Farnham Road.
Some minor work is taking place on Petersfield’s Madeleine Road, Stroud’s North Stroud Lane, Liss’s Rotherbank Farm Lane and Buriton’s Sumner Road.
If you’re planning a trip this weekend, the Hindhead Tunnel will be closed overnight on the 12th and 13th December, so be warned that there will be diversions on the A3.
And if we’re not saying what you’re seeing out there – you can call Petersfield 5 55 500 to help us keep Petersfield up to date.
