Proposed new housing system scrapped over threat of concreting over the greenbelt
Controversial proposals for planning reforms have been reversed by the government after new housing targets sparked backlash over fears that it could put greenbelt areas at risk of being concreted over.
Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire, addressed the situation with the following statement:
“I have argued that the proposed new system for housing numbers was not the best way to do it and would not be right for East Hampshire, and I am pleased that ministers have re-thought the approach. We do still need more housing, and in particular housing that is affordable for people growing up here and starting a family, but it is better to work out that need on the established basis.
“I have also been making the point that the system needs to consider specifically issues around National Parks and I will continue to make these points”
Damian Hinds’s office has said he will issue a longer press release in the coming days.
