A competition to be the first Petersfield Town Crier is down to the final two. And they’re married.
Candidates Faye and Martin Thompson from Rival Moor Road have been left as the last two standing after a rival candidate cried off.
It means the competitive public town cry later this month could be a right family ding-dong.
The public event will be held in Rams Walk where Martin and Faye will compete to give the best public announcements, complete with costumes and hand bells. As husband and wife, it won’t be the first time the two have exchanged rings.
Shine Radio’s Phill Humphries tried to find out what life is like within possibly the loudest house in Petersfield.
Where and when
The Town Crier will be decided at a public event in Rams Walk at 12 midday on 28 January 2023.
Or, as the Town Council would instruct the crier to proclaim:
“Oyez, Oyez, Oyez, Let it be known, that on this day, January the twenty-eighth two thousand and twenty-three at midday, the historic market town of Petersfield in Hampshire will appoint its first Town Crier. Such a person will be of good local standing, representing the venerable town of Petersfield with pride, honour, and civility. Promoting not only the proclamations of the town council, but also the good works of local charities and commerce. They will give a cheerful welcome to visitors and guests of the town alike. They will do all these things with good grace and a generous countenance, befitting their noble status and as a friend to all who think well of Petersfield. God Save the King.”
