The Flying Scotsman on the mid-Hants railway

Steam enthusiasts in Petersfield are left disappointed today.

Fans of steam were excited by the prospect of seeing the Flying Scotsman pass through our area on Saturday morning.

But the plans were changed last night.

The famous locomotive was supposed to take a route South through Haslemere, Liphook, Liss and Petersfield on its way to the south coast.

A timetable released last night shows the train has been re-routed onto the Winchester and Southampton line.

And it’s not just steam enthusiasts along the line who will be saddened.

Passengers on the service were promised pleasant scenery and undulating gradients through the Surrey Hills and the heart of the South Downs National Park.

Instead, they’ll get to see Basingstoke.

A previous visit to East Hampshire

The Flying Scotsman was in East Hampshire in early 2020 when it enjoyed a residential stay at Ropley. It visited the area to mark a milestone in a project on the Watercress Line.

Harrison RB met its team on location.
