Following many years of campaigning the Government announced the creation of a new medal intended to recognise the contribution of military and civilian personnel that took part in the various programmes aimed at developing nuclear weapons to be used by the British Armed Forces in the 1950s and 1960s.
Our local town has suitably honored three local veterans that received the new medal.

I worked on Canberra and Valiant aircraft which were involved in the H bomb tests although I was stationed at RAF Wyton, Huntingdon. My initial task was part of a Valiant wash team to decontaminate the aircraft; I was then posted to 58 Squadron Canberra PR7s used to ferry H bomb samples from Christmas Island to UK.
I was the main hoist winch driver for the last Balloon test on Christmas Island, Dont remember there being a Balloon shed, the aircraft dropping the H Bombs was a Valiant not a Vulcan ,I saw 4 test there and 3 at Marlinga the year before.
Was interesting listening to others that went though that experience and to relate to it al these years later, we are now very few of us left.
