Ukrainian culture is full of various holidays and traditions. Some of them date back to pre-Christian times.Ivan Kupala is a traditional Slavic holiday that existed long before the baptism of Kyivan Rus. Kupala was one of the annual mermaids, which began on the day of the solstice in June. The last day – Horpina Kupalnytsia fell on July 6, and Kupala began after lunch and lasted all night.
After the OCU and UGCC switched to the New Julian calendar, the date of some church holidays changed. Now Ukrainians celebrate them 13 days earlier. Only the date of Easter, which is calculated every year, remains unchanged, as well as those holidays that are tied to the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection.
Ivan Kupala is tied to the celebration of an important church event – the Nativity of John the Baptist, which once fell on July 7, but now on June 24. That is why we will celebrate Ivan Kupala on the night of June 24.”I believe that while in Britain, Ukrainians should remember and preserve their traditions in order to pass them on to their children,” – shared Ukrainian journalist Iva Repnytska.
