A Petersfield shop is boarded up for safety after an explosion in Petersfield town centre.
The blast blew-out the window at Twilly’s fabric alterations shop on Chapel Street. It left shop owner Tanya shaken and having to manage extensive damage to her shopfront.
It happened just after 11.30am.
Tanya told Shine Radio’s Stephen Martin that she had a lucky escape. It was only a layer of film across the window that prevented the shattered glass from hitting her in the face she says.
She says it was quite scary as she was sat right by the window sewing and “the dog went mental”.
The explosion was caused by a lorry tyre which blew out in the street outside Tanya’s shop.
Project managers who look after the Chapel Street shop units are making the window safe and organising repairs.
How loud was it?
From inside Twillys, Tanya described the explosion as a huge bang that sounding like a gun going off.
The sound of the blast was heard right along Chapel Street including inside Hectors. Tanya said other people reported hearing it as far away as the top end of Winton Road and up Lavant Street.
Meanwhile, inside Petersfield Bookshop, manager Rob heard and felt a loud boom he says.
Whose lorry caused the damage?
The 18 tonne Mercedes-Benz lorry is operated by Farnham-based Pump Services Surrey Ltd. It was in Petersfield to conduct drain pumping works behind buildings in The Square.
The lorry driver and the company were invited to speak on Shine Radio about the incident caused by their vehicle. A representative of Pump Services said it was a matter between them and the shop owner and they declined to provide a comment.
