Many complaints have been received to the Taro Leisure Centre, following the decision to go to licence free music.
In response to these complaints, Shine Radio’s Julie Butler asked the reasoning behind the decision from the Taro Leisure Centre’s General Manager, Dave West.

This new music is NOT as stated! Its not the same as popular licenced music or even similar. It’s generic, all classes are the same.
There is no feedback from virtual classes as no one attends. The virtual machine in the spin studio has been broken for months.
A question to answer is why the instructors have to leave their jobs to buy their own licence?
This question needs to be answered.
What I I find interesting is at no point does it explain WHY they’re not wanting to pay PRS PPL any more. Many of the small, independent shops in town pay PRS PPL to play music. It’s part of the cost of running a business. Why is the leisure centre wanting to cost cut on this? From what I understand classes and membership isn’t cheap, so surely class attendees are entitled to expect licensed music when they attend?
Speak to someone who regularly attends spin classes and the new music is a totally different experience and for some, myself included, ruins the workout completely…. The instructors should not be having to pay for their own licenses to put on a decent class when the music is so important to the workout. Lack of consultation very poor. I’m looking at alternative gyms.
