Openreach manages telecoms infrastructure for many internet providers

Telecoms provider Openreach says around one hundred customers in Petersfield remain without access to broadband services. It means they have no access to the internet unless they can connect with a mobile device.

Businesses and residents at the heart of the disaster say they have lost everything.

But the effects of the fire go further. Local independent traders who rely on broadband connectivity to take payments from customers say the impact of the fire affects them too. Credit card readers and modern tills connect to the internet that way.

Openreach says its engineers have been on site but are so far unable to gain access to the green cabinet which serves those customers.

They say they don’t believe the cabinet and its internal equipment has been damaged by the fire but the power supply to the burnt building has been turned off by SSEN for safety reasons and that has also cut power to the Openreach cabinet outside Twilly’s.

The roadside box is inside the safety cordon which cannot be lifted until structural engineers deem the building safe.

Openreach says its engineers will remain on site to determine when they are likely to be granted access by the emergency services.
