East Hampshire District Council leader Richard Millard has accused the Government of wasting millions of pounds after plans to reorganise local government in Hampshire were withdrawn.

He says councils should be compensated for resources spent on what he called a “pie-in-the-sky idea”.

Labour has defended its decision to halt the process. Its local government secretary Angela Rayner told the BBC “I got the legal advice and I hadn’t had the time to review and to go through all of that, and court cases were looming”.
