Patrick Derham’s life was transformed by a bursary as a child and he has worked passionately to widen access to university education and to independent schools. Patrick served as Headmaster of Westminster School from 2014 to 2020, and previously as Headmaster of Rugby School where he developed the Arnold Foundation Bursary Programme. He was instrumental in setting up the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation, the UK’s largest school bursary charity, which identifies children most likely to benefit from a bursary place at schools including Bedales.
Patrick was awarded an OBE for services to education in 2018 and sits on the Advisory Panel for IntoUniversity which provides local learning centres where young children are inspired to achieve. For this Q&A event, Patrick will join students who have benefited from a full bursary at Bedales Schools to explore the power of 100% bursaries for individuals, their families and communities, and more widely for society. Full bursaries at Bedales are funded by the John Badley Foundation, a registered charity set up to widen opportunity beyond the school’s existing bursary schemes. With the generosity of the Bedales community, the charity has funded full bursary places for 24 children to date, giving them a chance to thrive in this unique educational environment.
