A Ukrainian woman with a mathematical education opened a vegan café in London. When you see this pink establishment, it seems that everything should be light and airy, like in dreams or like a light cake with coffee. But in fact, this ease turned out to be hard work.
Iva Repnytska, the author of the Ukrainian-language podcast “Cold Coffee”, met with Lisa, the owner of a coffee shop in London, which opened just a year ago.
For a young Ukrainian woman, this was the first experience of opening a business, and she shared the differences between young people in Ukraine and in Britain. Lisa noted that the British at the age of 24 still live with their parents, study and do not think much about the future. Ukrainians are different. Ukrainian youth these years already want to be independent and are trying different career paths. She took a loan of 140,000 pounds and opened a vegan restaurant in the centre of London
“I can talk about Ukraine through food without killing anyone. And I think this is my superpower…. (Business) for me is always about energy first. Money is incredibly important to me because I want a cool life, I want to make a lot of money. It’s true. But money won’t get you far. That is, this business, it eats up my health, my energy, all my free time, my, I don’t know, youth. And if it’s just about money, then I’ll burn out in one day, I won’t last. But since I have energy and an idea that I want to build, that I want this business to give me, it helps me a lot,” Lisa shares.
