The Prime Minister has confirmed plans to build a new hospital for mid and north Hampshire.
The announcement came a week after Boris Johnson confirmed there would be funding to create 40 new hospitals across England, to be completed by 2030, though the figure includes some existing sites being redeveloped or consolidated.
East Hampshire MP Damien Hinds told the House of Commons on Wednesday that the confirmation is “welcome” and that the hospital would “serve many of my constituents in east Hampshire”.
The decision has been criticised by Liberal Democrat County Councillor Martin Tod, who says the move could be more about solving “a political problem in the Conservative Party rather than being properly thought through”. The plan could mean that Winchester Hospital may lose some of its current range of services.
Hampshire County Council is under fire for cutting off most of its phone lines.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service discovered that a number of telephone services run by the administration have been closed since 25th March.
The council admitted that only phone lines that take urgent calls have remained open. The others are set to be reopened this month. It stressed that online forms have been available instead.
Phone lines for general enquiries, libraries, blue badge and concessionary travel, countryside, roads and transport, recycling, waste and planning are among those that have been shut over the past six months.
However, the county council said a new technology platform, allowing staff to answer calls away from the office, will enable the phone lines to be switched back on.
And council leader Keith Mans highlighted the Hantshelp4Vulnerable helpline for isolated and vulnerable residents that has been launched in the past months.
The service connects people to support services on 0333 370 4000.
Nurses from the Rosemary Foundation are getting their walking boots on.
This Saturday they will embark on their third Remembrance walk. The fundraiser challenge will see the nurses travel from Hayling Island to Petersfield, on foot!
The Petersfield-based charity provides a “hospice at home” service for residents in and around the town. They are inviting people to join them for a section of the walk or the whole thing, in memory of a loved one who has been under their care and they are accepting donations.
The walk will begin at the Ferryboat Inn, Hayling Island at 7:30 and will take in sections of the Shipwrights Way, Staunton Way and Hangers Way, ending at their office in Petersfield. Petersfield Town Council needs another councillor.
There is a vacancy following the death of Liberal Democrat councillor George Watkinson earlier this year.
Watkinson had been representing the Causeway ward for 25 years. His years of service included a role as Town Mayor on three separate occasions.
Councillors have to attend council meetings, administer council-owned grounds and halls, and comment on planning applications.

Petersfield’s imperilled signal box is a national talking point.
The story of the signal box at Petersfield railway station has been a hot topic in the town recently. However, the news has now spread around the country and has reached the national press.
The Spectator magazine ran an article on it in their edition released on 3rd October. In the article, railway historian Christian Wolmar says “the Petersfield signal box may survive” and that “there are still some 700 boxes and there is hope that not all will disappear.”
Another national magazine, Private Eye, covers the signal box story in its latest edition. In the article, they question the logic behind the signal box becoming a “trespass and vandalism” concern, asking “who are the real vandals here?”
Travel news
Roads
Delays are likely on Andlers Ash road in Liss due to drainage repairs, the roadworks are expected to continue until 17th October.
Part of Fernhurst Road remains closed between Milland and Linch.
Railway
Buses replace trains between Petersfield and Havant all this weekend, and on Sunday you’ll need to take a bus all the way down to Portsmouth.
There’s also a revised service between Petersfield and London, and it’s all because of planned engineering works on the line.
Petersfield Town Centre still has the Covid-19 restrictions in place until further notice.
