Joff Lacey & Jon Walker consider the role of so-called ‘affordable’ housing in Petersfield, the apparent lack of it and how we got to where we are today.
If you’d like to suggest a local topic for Jon and Joff to get their teeth into, email team@shineradio.uk or phone Petersfield 01730 555 500.
Great show on the lack of affordable housing —more like this, please! Jon & Joff provided some great information and background for debate. Suggestion: could you be a bit more ambitious?!! how about expanding the show and including an interview or two with people who could potentially improve each of the situations under discussion? Fir example, for affordable housing, I think new national legislation would be needed to allow somebody with a modest income to purchase a house in Petersfield, so how about interviewing Damian Hinds, Lisa Nandy (or other designated Labour spokesperson for housing), and Tim Farron (or other designated Lib Dem spokesperson for housing)? You can do it!!
I’m sure you already have a long list of topics for your new show and don’t need any more at the moment, but I hope you won’t be offended if I offer a few additional suggestions for future programs:
Need for additional controlled pedestrian crossings (e.g. at Junct. of College Street & Barham Rd.; Durford Rd. Crossroads, and I’m sure other dangerous locations too). Current use of coloured bricks confusingly inlaid in the roads to encourage pedestrians to cross, but without any additional safety measures requiring vehicles to stop (e.g. at College Street & Barham Rd.)
Petersfield parking: why doesn’t Petersfield make the town more welcoming, and encourage more people to use the official car parks by allowing an initial short period of free parking, followed by reasonable hourly rates? (Commuters using residential parking is also a problem, and some residents don’t want to resort to using parking permits in their street).
Pedestrianizing the High Street and The Square!
HCC’s different management approaches to its various countryside parks (e.g., Ashford Hangers vs. Queen Elizabeth Country Park — Note: there’s some local history to this!).
Blue Sky Thinking: does Petersfield Council really have a vision for the long-term management of the town? Do the pressures of short-term needs and projects end up taking precedence over long-term plans? What’s the answer to this?
Could The Heath be brought more into focus for visitors to the town center? Many casual visitors are probably unaware of The Heath’s existence. Is there some way visitors (and residents) walking and shopping in the town center could be made aware / reminded of The Heath? Visuals / pictures? Better signage?
Historical relationships between the town and its various local schools. E.g., TPS; Churcher’s College; Bedales; Ditcham Park, etc. (Note: the relationships between pupils of these different schools has not always been good, but seems to be much improved now.)
Social care in Petersfield and the surrounding villages: how good / bad is this, and could more be done to allow elderly and infirm people to stay safely in their homes?
Best regards,
Drew
Thank you for listening Drew and I’m glad you enjoyed the show.
You have certainly given us some food for thought re the format and what topics we could cover. Regards Joff
